Upon first walking through the doors of The Manor some months ago now we both feel instantly in love with the warmth and welcome of the house and the Lord and Lady of The Manor!

Due to our rather biased relationship with The Manor we asked the gorgeous and very talented Emma Woodhouse, The Wedding Reporter to come along to write a report of the weekend and The Manor though her eyes as we felt it important to capture an independent overall view of this little treasure.

Imagine your guests pulling off the motorway, navigating a few minutes of winding country roads and then pulling up in front of a magnificently historical country house, made of local stone and dressed with original leaded windows and creaking old oak doors.

Imagine the look on their faces when you tell them that this place is yours, all yours, for the duration of your stay.

When The Manor threw open their doors for an open weekend, the wide-eyed wonder of guests who had stumbled off the M5 to this secluded yet convenient location was apparent the second they saw the house. Walking through the gravelled courtyard, they gratefully accepted cups of mulled spiced cider from local suppliers sourced by Marry Me, before stepping through the stone archway into the house.

The Manor is nestled at the foot of the Blackdown Hills amidst rolling Somerset countryside. The late 16th century country manor retains all of its Tudor charm but boasts the most immaculately stylish high-end finish.

Privately owned, The Manor is not your average wedding venue. Indeed, the owners have worked hard to create an environment where you and your guests will want to stay, play and party for the duration of your visit. There are no set packages; quotes are tailored around your requirements, making this the most personal hospitality experience you can imagine.

In the grandly oak panelled medieval banquet hall, an enormous table had been laid out fit for the most stylish of banquets. Brides-to-be, barely able to contain their rapidly developing devotion, circled the table, running their hands over the carved wooden chairs and marvelling at the giant inglenook fireplace.

Accompanying guests wandered through the labyrinth of rooms, falling in love with the cosy Drawing Room and beginning to feel at home in the lounge. Visitors stopped in the hallway to marvel at stained glass, peek around doors and run their fingers over the historical fabric of the house.

The sound of cooing and joyous exclamation could be heard floating down the winding staircase as visitors explored the bedrooms overhead. Each of the 11 rooms created more expostulations with their own individual styling and decoration. A variety of suites and private bathrooms with individual features filled the air with the sound of excited brides imagining which of their guests they would allocate to each room.

The sweet smell of a hog roast pervaded the house, inviting guests at the open weekend to descend the back stairs down to the scullery. Following the scent of pork baps, groups began to congregate in the large country style kitchen whilst chatting to the lord and lady of the manor over their snacks. A local wine merchant happily distributed his wares to keep guests topped up and warmed up with the rich liquid.

Further exploration allowed visitors to discover the games room and sauna, tucked away in the north wing of the house. Spilling out into the seven acres of grounds, gaggles of guests roamed the pristine gardens, discovering a swimming pool, Koi pond, croquet lawn, courtyard and a small lake on their adventure.

By the time visitors were slipping back into their cars, a hole in the shape of The Manor had been carved into their hearts. The thought of having 24 of their closest friends and family around them in the run of the house alongside a team of Michelin-star chefs if they decided not to cater for themselves was almost too much to bear.

Having seen that The Manor could offer the best of the best, potential brides would now be thinking twice about bland hotels and uncompromising packages. This unassuming open day had provided many couples with the perfect place in which to celebrate their future, surrounded by so much history.

Tractor and trailers were laid on to transport our Twitter guests from the top car park down to the farm on a rough laden track which all added to the instant charm of the place. Arriving in the valley our guests followed a path of tea-lights and were greeted by ourselves and the smiley River Cottage team in the beautifully decorated Yurt with a welcoming glass of Elderberry Fizz and Apple juice, with the fire burning and more of our fellow tweeps arriving, the hum of excited chatter filled the air. Everyone was so excited with not only the ride down to River Cottage but also with the warm ambiance of this rustic yet beautiful setting!

Once the enchanting yurt had filled, the fabulous RC team gave a very warm welcome and led the tweeps into the Barn ready for the next group to arrive. After the last of the arrivals everyone united in the barn where a consistent flow of scrumptious canapes were served with background music from Howling at the Moon who have their very own twist on folk music!! (A must to go and see).

The Barn is the main focus of River Cottage and is where all the activity of their events happen, the Tweet up evening was no exception. The building lends itself to a very laid-back atmosphere where many Twitter friendships were forming. We once again welcomed everyone and RC gave a brief talk on what they are all about and their general ethos – to be a ‘more than profit’ organisation.

During the evening groups were taken over to the main cottage where ‘Hugh’ presents his famous TV program, everyone of the Tweeps returning with big grins on their faces after having a glimpse of where Hugh’s delicious creations are made.

The prize draw was once again a hit with the infamous ‘Marry Me’ milk churn used to collect everyone’s business cards. Thank you to RC for donating some wonderful prizes including a fabulous dinner experience for two to signed Cook Books.

The evening seemed to go so quickly and many not wanting to leave but the tractor was geared up and ready to take the Tweeps back to the top of the valley and to give them a last landscape view of RC in the pitch black!! It was a fantastic evening enjoyed thoroughly by all.

We would like to express huge thanks to the whole team at River Cottage for their hard work and warm welcome as well as Norsworthy Photography for kindly documenting the evening for us and capturing all these wonderful photos on our blog post. Also big thanks to the fantastic Howling at the Moon for entertaining us and our Twitter guests and to the lovely Lizzie from Wedding Yurts for bringing along some of her Raw Chocolates for all to try which were a massive hit!
